Why Serengeti National Park is Special
The Serengeti National Park is, quite simply, the greatest wildlife sanctuary on Earth. Spanning 14,763 square kilometres of rolling savannah, acacia woodland, and granite kopjes in northern Tanzania, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has captivated travellers for over a century.
What sets the Serengeti apart is the Great Wildebeest Migration — the largest terrestrial mammal movement remaining on the planet. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 200,000 zebras and thousands of gazelles, embark on a 1,000-kilometre circular journey following the rains.
Beyond the migration, the Serengeti is home to Africa's densest population of lions, elusive leopards draped in sausage trees, cheetahs sprinting across open grasslands, and vast herds of elephants moving through ancient baobab groves.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park
🔥 Peak Season: Jun – Oct
The dry season offers the best wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, vegetation thins out making them easier to spot. This is prime time for the Great Migration (Serengeti) and river crossings. Expect clear skies and the highest visitor numbers. Book 3–6 months in advance.
🐯 Calving Season: Jan – Mar
The southern Serengeti and highlands come alive with newborn wildebeest calves. Predator activity is intense as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt. Lush green landscapes create stunning photography. Fewer tourists and excellent lodge availability. A hidden gem for safari enthusiasts.
🌿 Green Season: Apr – May & Nov – Dec
The wet season brings dramatic skies, lush landscapes, and fewer visitors. Birdwatching is exceptional with migratory species. Some roads may be challenging, but fly-in safaris remain unaffected. Best value for budget-conscious travellers.

How to Get There
The most popular route is a scenic drive from Arusha (approximately 5-6 hours to the central Seronera area), passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. For a faster option, scheduled bush flights operate from Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to airstrips within the park — Kogatude, Seronera, and Kisauni. Flying reduces travel time to just 45-60 minutes.
