Ngorongoro Crater
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera with 25,000 animals.
Why Ngorongoro Crater is Special
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on the planet. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed upon itself, it created the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a 260-square-kilometre natural amphitheatre teeming with an estimated 25,000 animals.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro offers the highest density of wildlife in Africa and one of the best chances on the continent to see all of the Big Five in a single game drive.
The crater floor is a microcosm of East African habitats — from open grasslands and acacia forests to soda lakes and swamps — all contained within steep 600-metre walls.

Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater
🔥 Peak Season: Jun – Oct
The dry season offers the best wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, vegetation thins out making them easier to spot. This is prime time for the Great Migration (Serengeti) and river crossings. Expect clear skies and the highest visitor numbers. Book 3–6 months in advance.
🐯 Calving Season: Jan – Mar
The southern Serengeti and highlands come alive with newborn wildebeest calves. Predator activity is intense as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt. Lush green landscapes create stunning photography. Fewer tourists and excellent lodge availability. A hidden gem for safari enthusiasts.
🌿 Green Season: Apr – May & Nov – Dec
The wet season brings dramatic skies, lush landscapes, and fewer visitors. Birdwatching is exceptional with migratory species. Some roads may be challenging, but fly-in safaris remain unaffected. Best value for budget-conscious travellers.
Practical Travel Tips
How to Get There
Ngorongoro Crater is approximately 180 kilometres (3-4 hours) west of Arusha. The drive passes through the beautiful Karatu highlands and enters the Ngorongoro Conservation Area at the Loduare Gate. For those combining with the Serengeti, the route continues north through the conservation area. Scheduled bush flights from Arusha to Lake Manyara Airstrip (approximately 45 minutes) offer a faster alternative.
