Why Lake Eyasi is Special
Lake Eyasi is a remote soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, approximately 80 kilometres southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater. This stark, beautiful landscape is home to two of Tanzania's most fascinating indigenous tribes: the Hadzabe and the Datoga.
The Hadzabe are one of the last true hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth, having lived in this region for over 40,000 years. Their ancient lifestyle, language, and traditions offer visitors an extraordinary window into humanity's earliest ways of life. The Datoga, skilled blacksmiths and cattle herders, provide another layer of cultural richness to this remote corner of Tanzania.

Best Time to Visit Lake Eyasi
🔥 Peak Season: Jun – Oct
The dry season offers the best wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, vegetation thins out making them easier to spot. This is prime time for the Great Migration (Serengeti) and river crossings. Expect clear skies and the highest visitor numbers. Book 3–6 months in advance.
🐯 Calving Season: Jan – Mar
The southern Serengeti and highlands come alive with newborn wildebeest calves. Predator activity is intense as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt. Lush green landscapes create stunning photography. Fewer tourists and excellent lodge availability. A hidden gem for safari enthusiasts.
🌿 Green Season: Apr – May & Nov – Dec
The wet season brings dramatic skies, lush landscapes, and fewer visitors. Birdwatching is exceptional with migratory species. Some roads may be challenging, but fly-in safaris remain unaffected. Best value for budget-conscious travellers.

How to Get There
Lake Eyasi is approximately 160 kilometres (3-4 hours) west of Arusha, accessed via a rough road from Karatu. The journey passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and offers stunning views of the Rift Valley. Most visitors combine Lake Eyasi with Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara as part of a 2-3 day cultural safari.
